I can pass the buffer-overflow labs by following steps, but I don't *get* canaries. Is the canary before or after the saved return address, and why does overwriting it crash the program before my payload even runs?
I keep bouncing between Ghidra and r2 tutorials and finishing neither. For someone doing the Academy reverse-eng track, which one should I commit to first and why? Looking for a real opinion, not 'use whatever works'.
